its rediculously easy to get in it if you look up under the slam panel
but get a new one first

Sorry but it might seem ridiculously easy to you but I can't see up under the slam panel as the grill is in the way and the screws to undo it are under the bonnet lip....

you do need a torch and a long lever, but you can just click it open

My release cable has also broken. I have taken all the chrome surrounds off yet still can't get to the catch. Anyone have a special technique for this? Or even which side to attack it from?

If you remove the screws on the bottom & sides of the grille that are accessible, then gently pull the bottom of the grille towards you, you should be able to get your arm up underneath to release the mechanism with a screw driver. You will probably bend the metal of the grille slightly around it's upper mountings, but you can soon hammer these areas flat again afterwards,

As above a torch and a long screwdriver will make life essier, but I managed to release the bonnet in this way at the side of the road using nothing but a set of house keys. I'd been fiddling under the bonnet and stupidly left the keys to the locked car on top of the air filter housing before slamming the bonnet shut!
