i have an union jack on the roof of my car and i was wondering if i could just peel it off by heating it with a hair dryer or something?? would it peel the paint off it has been on there for about 2-3 years i think!! and if so could i respray the roof of my car with some cans from halfords and finish with a good result??

never done it before, but i guess it all depends on what the paint is like underneath, if it comes off ok but just leaves a gooey mess behind use a can of deodorant like linx to get the mess off.
you could use rattle cans to paint the roof but i think the roof is the hardest panel to spray, and this is the wrong time of the year to paint and get the vinyl off, bit to cold.

I removed some bonnet stripes that had been on for over 10 years, just with a hairdryer. It worked perfectly for me, but you may not be so lucky with your paintwork.

So deoderant will get sticky marks off ? i didn't realise but my roof seems to have checks on it at some time but can just be seen under artificial light should this get rid of these marks ??

Hairdryer may work, we use heatguns at work (if you've got one) and then if it leaves any glue behind you should really use thinners to get the glue off, meths may do it, but thinners will do a better job.

I think you should really have mentioned what type of thinners.... If you try using ordinary paint thinners you'll lose half the paint off your roof at the same time!!

White spirit should be ok on Cellulose or 2K paint.... But you need to test it in an inconspicuous area first!

Hairdryer just makes the glue and the vinyl soft, so it's much easier to peel the sticker off without it ripping or breaking every two seconds....

So deoderant will get sticky marks off ? i didn't realise but my roof seems to have checks on it at some time but can just be seen under artificial light should this get rid of these marks ??

Sounds more like the paint has faded/dulled in the areas which weren't covered with the roof decal previously..... Your best bet would be to use a mild cutting compound to cut back the surface of the paint so it all looks the same, I doubt deodorant would do anything!!!

agree with amy, white spirits or paraffin should remove the glue.
again the surrounding paint can fade so a light rub with t cut or if needed g3 rubbing compound.
