hylomar blue. Places like, rocker cover gasket, timing case gasket.

Dont use on head gasket and places where clearences are critical.

I only use it around half moon seal on crank cap

and bit on the joints where 2 gaskets meet & gear selector seal

it can cause problems if a lot is squeezed out inside the engine , and breaks off

as the oil strainer tends to clog a bit and bits can get into oil gallery's

(all my opinion)

I agree with sledgehammer about where it is needed, particularly at the junction between gaskets, at both ends of the engine to gearbox joints, etc. You don't really need it anywhere else, but some people, including me, use it on one side (top) of the rocker cover gasket, and allow it to harden somewhat before fitting the cover. That way, the gasket stays located as you fit it (they often try to pop out, or in, along the long sides), and you can get it off cleanly, when you need to adjust the tappets and re-torque the head. With care, you can use the rocker gasket at least 6 times, maybe more, if you don't overtighten the two bolts.

Use a very small amount of RTV on the lower half of both sides of the front plate and timing cover gaskets. Or use a late model gasket here as the MPi versions have the RTV built in so the dose is exactly right.

I always use gasket sealant (like hylomar) on anything other than head gaskets. Only a tiny amount, so that it doesn't go inside, but enough to make me feel happy that I've done all that I can. It's not critical, but I do.

On the rocker cover gasket, I put sealant between the cover and gasket, to keep it in place as one-peice... on the other I use grease so that the gasket doe't 'break up' and I can re-use it without any faff.

+1
and use sealant between rocker cover and cork gasket.

Is instant gasket OK to use between the rocker and a cork gasket?

Yes, Instant Gasket is just an RTV rubberised sealant.

Excellent... I'm changing mine this weekend now I've stripped and painted the old rocker.

Cheers!
