Before I go and buy one for probably what will be the only time I use it, does anyone have one in Surrey/South London they would be prepared to loan me in exchange for some beers etc? ie anyone here bought one to use once and now its collecting garage dust?

i personally hate engine cranes! I much prefer the simple block and tackle, Got mine for free as it was out of date too! but one of those should cost you about £20 and then another £15 for a lifting bracket so its nice and cheap and even if you do only use it once then so what! at least its there for the future and it takes up no room!

Block and tackle are fine if you have something to attached it to that is structurally sound. It's no good if all you have is pencil thin wooden cross beams, I'd say get an engine crane, not to bad of a price at machine mart. On the other hand if you do have provision to mount the block and tackle then they are worth there weight in gold.

Try a local plant hire firm - shouldn't cost much more than £30 for a weekend.

you can make your own:
my dad made a large A frame out of planks of wood and then used it to lift the body off his range rover,
if you have timber beams im sure you could bolt some other bits of wood together then use some temporary celling joists.
