hi Guys,

My poor mini has a new problem, i was driving home i noticed that the clutch on the drive home slowly became unresponsive, to the point where i had no clutch at all. If i press the clutch pedal it goes straight to the floor.

Unfortunately i was stuck in busy traffic at the time, but i managed to grind it into the the third gear and slowly slump it home. Does anyone know what may have caused this and also what possible damage i might have caused forcing it into gear once the clutch was engaged?

Please help I'm desperate, i love my mini and need her back on the road ASAP once i parked up the engine will start however since this problem has happened I've noticed it stutters before firing, I'm really worried my poor mini is in serious trouble.

I have a 1996 Mini Sidewalk SPI

Regards
Craig

Don't know about the stuttering but there's no reason why it'd be down to the clutch. The clutch sounds like a hydraulic failure, is the pedal easier to push? Get someone to push the pedal while you watch the clutch arm under the bonnet to see if it moves.

The clutch pedal does not work at all, if i press it with my foot it is very soft and goes straight to the floor, it feels like its no longer attached to what ever is on the other side. How would i go about checking the fluid levels for the clutch?

as you look at the engine, to the left of the carb / air filter, at the back of hte bulkshead there is a small bean-tin shaped reservoir. unscrew the cap and look in with a light. It's tight access by thee way. If there is no fluid in it, inspect the clutch slave cylinder and pipework for leaks. Peal back the rubber boot on the slave and see if it is wet.
