The MINI Paceman concept from last year is to be launched officially later this year to go on sale in 2013, possibly to be known as the 'MINI Countryman Coupe' but some sources are also suggesting the return of the Mini-Metro name to the Mini range is under serious consideration.......

"It’s a name that translates well across European, American and Asian markets, and perfectly reflects the young go-getting urban feel that the car is trying to achieve. So, could the UK price lists witness the return of the MINI-Metro name in 2013?"

"The MINI range was also able to achieve a new sales volume high in 2011. In total, 285,060 units of the MINI (2010: 234,175 units) were sold, 21.7% more than in the previous year. The MINI Countryman performed particularly well, with sales up more than six fold to 89,036 units (2010: 14,337 units). The MINI Coupé was launched in September 2011 as the fifth model in the MINI family and recorded a sales volume of 3,799 units up to the year end."

The MINI range is not far off from matching the 318,475 sales peak from 1971 achieved by the classic Mini range back in in 1971:

What happened in 1980 for sales to drop massively? Is that when the superior Metro came out?

The Metro appeared on 1980, so that would make sense.

As said the Mini-Metro was launched in 1980 replacing the Mini Clubman saloon, estate and 1275GT which were all dropped leaving just a couple of variations of the original roundnose 998cc Mini saloons at the bottom end of the range. However this was much better than the original Austin-Rover plan which was to stop Mini production completely!

The small increased production peak in 1990 was due to re-introduction of the 1275cc Rover Mini Cooper and the increase in official Mini exports to Japan.

... are they just working their way down a list at random picking names out of a hat?

In what way is that anything like a Mini-Metro!?

Plus - if MINI are reaching total sales of the 1971 peak ... whoop de do. But I'd rather know it as a percentage of vehicles on the road/sold. That would be more accurate, surely?

Exactly - I don't think the figure itself is anywhere near as impressive as it was back in 1971? Happy to be proved wrong, but as a percentage, I would guess that the Mini is still miles ahead?

I don't think it'll happen. Metro means Geo Metro to most in North America and there is no way on Earth BMW want the MINI to be associated with that.

Imported cars were taking a much smaller percentage of the UK market in 1971 but badly built and unreliable outdated BL cars in particular were starting to make British car buyers buy Japanese 'Datsuns' etc in ever increasing numbers. The choice of cars was much smaller................I remember as I also had a classic Mini then but most people I knew were switching to foreign cars for the first time............
