hi,

my mini has had a lot of work done previously most of which is pretty poor welding and shoddy, this panel has been poorly repaired on my car and looks untidy is there a repair panel for it, it sits between the rear wheel arch and rear subframe mounting panel. (see pic)

the first 2 look like its the rear wheel arch
with a part of the boot floor,

also with the rear subframe mounting point.

think you will need a lot of panels

It is the closing panel, 14A6611 or 14A6612 depending on which side (see Somerford web site). Yours has been well and truly bodged. The quarter circle piece which is supposed to be welded to the flanged edge of the rear quarter panel is entirely missing, and to fill the gap it has been welded across the back of the quarter panel instead.

Under the outer sill should be a crossmember extension with jacking point, a front slinging bracket (same either side) and a rear slinging bracket (different). See http://www.theminifo...ct/page__st__30 for how to do sill repairs properly and make those bits. Scott is doing a brilliant job of all his structural bits, as well as some seriously impressive fabrication of bits that show.

Some people seem to be leaving them out, but they can actually add strength and stiffness. They are welded to the inner sill, and ideally plug welded in about 4 places through the outer sill.

By the way, your car has had oversills fitted. Very bad, as I think you know. I can tell by the rust line on the floor! I am sure you will be fitting standard sills, which are stronger and stiffer, as the weld to the floor is in the place it was designed to be, making a proper box section. There is someone on this forum who has spent a lot of time and money on a build, with oversills, and can't be told that they are unacceptable, weaken the car, and likely as not will be seriously corroded before he gets it on the road.

Yeah it needs quite a bit of work outer sills, rear valance bit of rot in the roof and a rear subframe panel. this is the same picture marked up. is this panel part of the boot floor or is it a infill/finisher panel.

It is an infill, because the car would probably be impossibleto build if it was part of the floor. My impression is that it must be fitted after the wheelarch is welded to the floor, and the boot floor is welded to the heelboard, but before the side (quarter panel) goes on. But in restoration we can use plug and seam welds, so things can go on in a different order when necessary.

The quarter round piece normally lies just behind the body side, sloping slightly inwards, as it must have tight flange contact at the bottom edge, but is welded to the slightly inward sloping upper part of the heelboard edge. The flat part is effectively an extension of the floor, and is welded to the arch, floor and heekboard. It is quite an ugly thing to do, but just about the only way of assembling the car and closing the hole, without weld spots showing across the face of the quarter panel.

When you have a new panel in your hands, it should be obvious, far more so than words will convey.

I usually leave out the jacking point and cross member extension pieces. They just attract rust and cause more trouble than they are worth.

The van/estate/pickup doesn't have these parts and all has whacking great holes in the side(windows) and it wasn't an issue for the factory at the time.

I've pulled apart cars that have virtually perfect inner sills, the only rot being around the slinging points and the jacking points.
