Built a few engines, tuned the thing up quite alot, but, I've never looked into this area before and now they're leaking so must address it.(still on the originals).I dont want to use bog standard ones andI dont know what's in the future, maybe it will get taken round the odd circuit so I may as well do it as well as I can, adjustable type even.Car has adjustable height suspension and is about an inch lowered,I can't do too much out here in the country lanes,I value my exhaust, also changed to 165/60/12s. Just to avoid confusion maybe I should have called them shock absorbers, they are commonly. Thanks, I would welcome your suggestions

They're not shock absorbers, they are dampers, you were correct.
I can recommend KYB gas a just if you're on budget, spax or gaz if you want adjustable and budget is not a problem. Gaz offers shortened dampers for lowered cars.

I've heard mixed reviews about kyb and they look really skinny too. If moneys no object then look at gaz or spax, if your on a budget then id go for gmax. Stiffer than standard but not too stiff to be annoying, and they look sweet.

I have used SPAX for many years and they are fine. I use GAZ on my Rover 214 rally car and they have been superb and much stronger than the SPAX I originally fitted to it as trhey just bent at the bottom. Mind you they are McPherson struts on the Rover.
KYB are good for ordinary road use, but I wouldn't want to drive really aggressively on them.

i have only got good things to say about GAZ dampers, slightly cheaper than spax and koni etc. easily adjusted, lowered and standard ride height versions, perfect.

kyb gas adjusts i think are little better than standard, and gmax ones are pretty poor too in my opinion (and i drive allot of different minis fitted with different dampers on a daily basis)

i have used the rather pricey protech ones too, and took them off after about a month when 1 started leaking! sexy to look at, but expensive and that leak was most dissapointing.
