right me and a few friends of mine (after plenty of guinness) have decided to do the mongol rally in 2014! which is great because ive been wanting to do it since i was 14 but never had the team mates :(

and we have decided to do it in an old transit minibus. which they do bend the rules for such vehicles :)

I know a few maniacs on here have done it so what are your tips? we were thinking of going the striaght (ish) route through romania, moldova, up through russia and down through kazackstan! greeeeaaaaat success!

where can we get supplies from is my main concern but fundraising and other things :)

Speaking from experience of prepping a few vehicles for this rally, including an old london black cab, youll need underguarding for the vehicle, including guards for the brake and fuel lines under the car. Exhaust will need to be up and out the way as best as possible. A comfy drivers seat, maybe from some top spec modern car would also be a good idea. An additional fuel tank, or a few 20l fuel cans full of fuel is a must too. And 2 spare wheels and tyres. And lots of spares.

Everything on the vehicle would ideally need to be in the best possible condition before you set off. Fail to plan and you plan to fail.

Its also an idea to have a safe in the vehicle, for passports, cash, etc. what we always done was put two safes in, bolted or welded to a solid part, i say two, one in somewhere obvious, like in the boot, with around £100 of cash and some fake bits of paper work in, then another safe, thats better hidden to put passports, etc in. That way, if the bandits do break in, theyll find the obvious safe, and if they do get into it, chances are they wont think to look for a second safe.

Sound advice sir. that should be too hard to do with a minibus, i have access to loads of spares aswell, but what about other planning? like routes and cash to raise?

You need to find some sponsors and a charity to raise the money for dude!

You plan the route yourself, But this might help you as a rough idea, the pekin to paris rally routes that have been done, a quick google search should pull them up, it went through mongolia, again, i was involved with prepping a few vehicles for that rally, including my old boss's hilux support vehicle. I think the last peking to paris route went From mongolia, briefly into russia, then through kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, turkey, then a ferry over to greece, Through greece, then another ferry onto italy, then onto paris. Thats what was called "the lower route".

I suppose you could go through germany, then poland and ukrane, then go through russia onto mongolia. Russia's suppose to be quite an interesting and nice, i know russian lasses are nice :P

Visa's are anoter thing to think about too. And it might be an idea to take a credit card with a big limit on it too, just incase you get really stuck, then you can whack it. But only in an emergency. And i guess youll be leaving the bus in mongolia? Im not sure on the rules of leaving things there, so youd need to check that out. If you are leaving it there, youll need to fly home, and get a flight arranged.
