Hi
I need to remove the fan and pulley from the dynamo on my mini. The dynamo is removed from the car already.

How do I lock the pulley from turning when I try and undo the nut? I can see a square shaped shaft in the gap between the pulley and fan, but its only 4mm wide, and I have no spanners that thin.

Any thoughts? putting it in a vice is a no go, I dont want to damage the pulley if the nut is very tight.

Thanks
John

Try this, no guarantee though!

Place an old fan belt round the pulley. Place pulley across open vice jaws, i.e. dynamo spindle at right angle to vice screw, and pull belt down between jaws. Tighten vice to trap belt, pulling tight as it goes. Now try spanner.

Or, pull free part of belt through a tube and find some way of tightening the loop which comes out the other end, e.g. twist with a tommy bar. That way you have made an improvised strap wrench.

I did one by placing the pulley in a Black and Decker Workmate, dynamo body downwards, at the notch in the plywood jaws for better grip. The pulley was not damaged.

I second Tiger's suggestion. I have improvised strap wrenches like that and they can work.

Further to that method of holding the pulley... use an air impact wrench if you have one. I have much better luck fitting and removing dynamo/alternator pulley nuts with an impact wrench than I do with traditional spanners or sockets.
