Hi, i recently replaced the clutch on my 998cc '87 advantage and have been having problems since.
First was when i was pulling away or parking, and sometimes between gear changes the clutch would make a screeching noise. I changed the master as thought a new stiffer clutch might have caused the old one to pack up but had no effect. I replaced the slave and also the hose between about six months ago so im sure its not them.
One thing i have noticed is when you depress the clutch pedal the slave piston rod is sticking out a long way and as you get to the bottom of the travel, the clutch arm stops moving and the slave moves away if that makes sense.
Next thing is i went to go to brooklands show on sunday and my clutch wouldnt engage at all. I could get it into reverse but it crunched a bit but no forward gears. Will go in all gears fine without engine running.
Next thing i think may be the release bearing. The one that came off my old clutch looked like a closed ball bearing race type thing where as the new one that came with the verto kit had a cage type thing around it ( http://www.minispare...id=35421&title= ). That one. Is there a possiblility the clutch is playing up because this has been installed the wrong way round?
I have bled the system thorougly a couple of times to be sure its not that.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Have you got the bottom pin in off the slave cylinder bracket into the bell housing? I know it sounds daft but i had the exact problem when changing mine. Worth double checking.

Did you re-set the overthrow stop nuts after re-fitting?

Did you take the short clutch arm out of the plunger when you worked on it? If so, maybe it has been re-fitted the wrong way round....

No I didn't take the short arm plunger out so shouldn't have disturbed that.
I have adjusted the throw out stop several times and hasn't made a change.
Not sure What pin you are talking about finny, you mean the split pin on the slave piston?
Any ideas about the release bearing?
Thanks

The throw out stop needs for a gap of 6.5mm on a new clutch. You cannot set the throwout stop gap with a worn clutch. Any more than 6.5mm and the the throw out mechanism will bind eventually leading to crankshaft thrust bearing failures.

This 6.5mm throw out is more than enough to release the pressure on the clutch plate allowing for full disengagement, so long as all the parts have been fitted correctly.

One other thing to consider is whether the primary gear is siezed onto the crankshaft tail. It could be down to too close tollerence on the primary gear bushes/ bearings, or the lock ring/ 'C' washer binding on the primary gear if the flywheel center is tight up against them when installed.

It's is a new clutch I fitted. I can't see anything being seized as it was working fine (apart from a sloppy clutch) before the clutch change and worked ok after but has just progressively worst.
Is there a possibility the plunger that the clutch arm moves has perished a bit causing excessive play, as it feels the first Half of the clutch pedal travel is nothing

One thing i have noticed is when you depress the clutch pedal the slave piston rod is sticking out a long way and as you get to the bottom of the travel, the clutch arm stops moving and the slave moves away if that makes sense.

Finnysminiis referring to the long 1/4" UNF bolt and spacer tube that ensures the lower end of the slave cylinder bracket does not move when the pedal is depressed. The bolt is installed through the slave cylinder bracket, through the spacer tube into the clutch cover, sometimes known as the wok.
