Only just recently I have noticed that my gear lever has become stiff when selecting gears especially reverse. It feels like there isn't any oil in the linkage. I have checked my engine oil and there is enough in there. The clutch seems to be fine as well. Could anyone shed any light on this please as I'm not quite sure what is up...

Thanks in advance :-)

Which type gear lever linkage have you got ?

If it is a rod change (most common - 2 bars between gearstick & gearbox) - then un-clip the gear lever , pull it out

and give it a clean / grease up , look for wear on the ball & nylon cup & shafts - they can take a bit of wear

also look under neath at the roll pins - they can get sloppy and even fall out

there is a plate on the bottom of the remote box that is held in with 6 screws ,

that holds the reverse ridge which the gear lever is lifted over when you select reverse

it may be worn / dirty / damaged by wear , so worth a look

Guesswork's is your man for a more in depth analysis of gearbox faults

When you say stiff, is it stiff across the gate, ie left to right, but ok forward and backward ?

Yeah. It goes into gear okay but just noticed going from second into first crunches a little bit. But left to right is really stiff.

Crunching aside, the problem lies within the gearbox....

Becoming a common fault of mid to late 80's gearboxes where the one piece reverse idler bush was changed for a split two piece bush, of which one decides over time to work its way out of the gear and thus causes a misalignment of the reverse bell crank lever causing friction on the selector spool.. You feel this as a stiffness left to right or across the gate on the gear lever.

Two choices...

Live with it...

Pull the engine and recondition ( or replace ) the gearbox.
