Hi all,
Iv decided that I need to get a wideband meter for the mini, I had it set up last year at baldwins and it go's like stink but overheats rapidly if stationary for more than a min or two.
Anyway I want to fit an air/fuel meter so I can see if it's lean or not, I'm guessing that fuel and timing are my overheating problems.
Would a narrow band be ok for me as a very infrequent mini driver?
Is it best to by a complete kit or can it be done cheaper?
Any one got one for sale?
Thanks for any help, always appreciated
Richard

The narrowbands are super cheap & are ok for a rough guide, but the widebands are far superior.
You can get a narrowband sensor from the scrappy for next to nowt & the narrowband gauges off ebay are as cheap as chips. Otherwise the AEM wideband can be bought with sensor for about £135 & it a top bit of kit.

On another note. Are you running a dizzy ? If so your timing could be way out low down. Most likely the timing has been swung back to make it safe at full advance under boost, this will most likely leave it retarded everywhere else. Unless your dizzy's been tailored to suit the comlete advance curve ?

I have MJ in the car but I'm running the engine in using a standard dizzy.
Before I took it to Baldwin I think I set the timing to about 5 deg and it was much better. I have no idea what it is now.

What's your engine spec ? If the compression is lowered much you'll find you need a lot more advance low down. For example, mine requires 16 degrees at 1500rpm to run best. At 5 degrees it would be horrrrible.

fully rebuilt 1293 with Std turbo head, running standard 4psi at the moment.
As this was my first attempt at a turbo A series im learning all the time. once i have ironed out some wrinkles i will deffently increase the spec.
Many thanks for your help on this Turbo Phil. I have done the usual mistake, new radiator, new thermostat, new guage, etc. its been nearly 8 months since iv been out in it because of this problem and really want to sort it out now.
My only other concern is that I have piped in a second radiator, I used the old heater matrix and piped it the same as the heater was. I have done away with the heater tap on the head and put a take off pipe in place of the tap.
do you think think this could be causing a restriction? or air lock?, when its running all the pipes are hot and have water in.

For the initial setup it might be sufficient to visit your local garage to hook your Mini up to one of their testing devices. I have been to a garage today and adjusted my carb according to the lambda value. Didn't cost me anything

i'd definately recommend the AEM setup, its come down a hell of a lot in price since i got mine but it's been worth every penny!
