Austin, What Else Did They Do Other Than The Mini?

Hello,

Please dont rack your brains on this one as It's just a fleeting thought, I have quite a few lol but what other cars, vans or what evers did Austin also do as well as the mighty Mini?

I know they did an maxi, metro and princess of the top of my head, but any other thoughts? reagrds

ok are you ready... I will stick to mini era cars -

1100 & 1300 (ADO16) Allegro all fwd like mini , 1800 (landcrab) 2200 (big landcrab) , 3 litre (big big landcrab) A30, A35, A40 various versions (Devon, Dorset, Farina), A50 & A55 & A60 saloons estates (aka Cambridge), A105 (aka Westminster), 1/4 ton van & pick up (morris minor rebadged) 1/2 ton van & P/U, J2 & J4 van, Maxi, Princess (wedge) 18/22 series (same wedge) Ambasador (wedge with hatch) Sherpa van.

Damn I know there are more but these are the ones that come to mind.

by the way I am not a car geek - I used to work for NZMC the New Zealand version of BMC :whistling: who am I kidding I'm a car geek :geek:

They made quite a few cars other than Minis, as wikipedia will tell you:

Ah, the Austin-Healey 3000. Now that was some car. I have driven a few of those and my goodness they really are something, especially when fitted with a modified engine.

Austin ceased to exist as a marque in 1969. Anything badged as Austin after that is not an Austin but an Austin Rover, which is another name for Leyland.

Austin Rover did not exist until 1981
BMC became BLMC in 1969, then BL in 1975. Austin Rover was a subsiduary of BL. BL became the Rover Group in 1985, and Austin Rover lasted until 1989.

Austins made after 1969 included the 1100, 1300 range, Allegro, 1800 2200 range, Princess, Ambassador, Metro, Maestro and Montego.

I still on occasion make assembly's for Leyland Trucks

they now make lorry bodies - not just the cab / chassis

The Austin 7 was almost as ground breaking as the Mini, as we know the Mini was launched under the same name.

Yes. The Mini followed in a great tradition as an Austin Seven. The original Austin Seven was the first mass produced car to have all the controls in the positions that are standard on all cars now.
The first Jaguars and Lotuses were modified Austin Sevens.
The first BMWs (believe or not) were made in Longbridge and were Austin Sevens assembled and rebadged in Germany. After that BMW made them under license. A bit ironic really given the current ownership of MINI.
The first Nissans, or Datsuns as they were then, were basically Austin Sevens.

The Mini was a Morris, of course, not an Austin.

When Austin and Morris joined together in 1952 to form BMC, Alec Issigonis came from the Morris side of the fence where he'd already designed the Morris Minor long before he designed the Mini Minor.
