Hello everyone,

Apart from the single and standard interior light located on the passenger side, I would like to add another roof light to my 1984 austin mini mayfair but I wanted to ask if anyone had any ideas or thoughts on how to do this?

I was simply thinking about popping down to my local scrap yard, picking up a nice looking roof light and its surround from a vehilce ("A" been any cars roof light that I like the look of, lol) and some how fixing it in a central position to roof in my mini somewhere towards the front and running wires from this new unit to the existing light to power the new second one.

Does this sound possible or am I dreaming? lol I think this will work and look ok too (depending on me picking thew right sort of interior light) but i would like your thoughts and ideas before do anything.

Chris.

There is nothing above the headlining to fix it to. You will have to fabricate a panel. I have considered, and I know others have done this, taking a second standard lamp panel from a scrapper and fitting it to the other side to give two lamps. Or you could fabricate a hoop that will fit above the headlining to support a lamp in the middle.

Thanks for your thoughts Dan... looks like I will have to put my thinking cap on for this one then, but I think it's worth the effort as I really want to upgrade the interior roof lighting on my mayfair.

I was just thinking about putting something quite close to the rear view mirror at the front, in or around that area anyway.

If you find someone with an old shell they are cutting up and buy the piece of the roof rail that houses the light holder.

Drill out the spotwelds and rivet it in place. (not over the headliner bar hole as I did at first)

Run 2 wires parallel from the lamp holder on the passenger side and the 2 lights will work together.

If you want brighter. I fitted these in place of the bulbs.

Held in place with a hot glue gun and wires soldered to make the connections. Makes quite a difference.

Hope this helps

Steve

Edit:

Added these in the back also.

Hello Steve, thanks for the post and the photos, I also have to say steve what a fantastic job you have done with your daughters mini, just been looking at the big thread, WOW springs to my mine...

I cant say my own mini will get quite as much attention as yours or be half as good either when its done but I will try my best with mine and try to enjoy getting her how I want it. I appriciate your suggestion but thinking about the interior lamp issue, I wouldnt mind coming up with a plan to add another light but without removing the head lining.

I am thinking about making a bracket and attaching it from the centre front area (around the rear view mirror ) and attaching a light to this, but I tend to have rolls royce ideas and only push bike money lol

There is still nothing up there to fix it to, even around the mirror mounting. The mirror is screwed into the cant rail, there is no other structure at all. You will have to peel the headlining back somewhere if you want to put extra lamps in.

Naturally, your right and it's just wishful thinking on my part I think, lol
