I have a no claims bonus on my main car but am I right in thinking that even though I am the one that has it and I can only drive one car at a time, I cannot apply my NCD to my Mini as well as my main car?

That's correct, you can only apply a No Claims Discount entitlement to one policy at a time. So you can only use it on two cars if you have a muti car policy (i.e both cars insured on the same policy). The other option is a specialist "mirror policy", designed for people who have an additional second vehicles to insure (i.e. classic cars/ motor homes etc). These "reflect" the level of no claims discount that you have on your separate main policy, even though there technically isn't any no claims earned on the second policy.

Speak to your insurance company or broker - they may be prepared to put both cars on the same policy. However; if you have a classic car policy for the Mini, that may not be possible.

Thanks for the replies - I thought that was the case but couldn't remember. I tried a multi-car policy and the quote was more expensive than the two individual ones. When the guy rang me to see if I wanted to go ahead, he couldn't understand why I laughed and said no thanks! So far, living in nice leafy Surrey, being 40 years old, keeping the Mini in a garage and doing less then 10k miles per year is going to cost me over £400! I hate insurance companies...

Have you tried a Footman James classic policy? They don't take NCD into account when calculating premiums and their classic policies don't earn NCD either. At your age, you should only be looking at around the £100-£150 mark with Footman James, plus you get a discount with your TMF+ membership number too.

EDIT: I think you also get breakdown cover, unlimited mileage and European cover included too.

you can drive and insure more than one car at once but only use ncd on one policy at a time whether that be a multicar policy or not

They were the first people I went to. Completed their form and was then told they were unable to quote so I'll wait and see what they say tomorrow. Thanks for the tip though - £400 seemed excessively high to me even sans NCD.

Some insurers will allow you to split your no-claims onto two policies if you have a number of years built up.. All these questions are for your insurer to answer, or at the very least for the insurance section of the forum.

Moved.

What happens if you have an accident with two seperate policies getting no claims discount? Do you loose the discount on both? That would seem unfair if you can't use one discount for two policies.

I might speak to them about something like that - they came back and quoted me £179 which is considerably less than anyone else...I'll be cancelling the one I took out in favour of that :)
