i have nearly finished my 1098 engine build but as i turn the engine over by hand it sounds as if there is something catching on the timing chain cover, i have fitted a duplex kit and its all fine when the cover is off, it sounds very much like the chain rubbing on something when the cover is fitted.....i did however fit the metal washer shim thing (the one with the "F" stamped on it).....on the end of the crank behind the timing cover, should this still be fitted with the duplex kit as i'm sure that i never fitted one on my last engine (which also had a duplex kit).

cheers in advance.

have you knocked out the cover, you have to knock out the cover to stop the chain fouling, I forget which point, but if you remove cover should be able see where its rubbed.

oh....ok, i didn't realise that the cover had to be modified to clear the chain, i will give it a good few turns then so that it gives it a chance to mark the inside of the cover,

thanks.

Did you remove enough of the inside of the timing cover? there is also a small lump that you have to bash flat..here is a picture of the one I did for my engine..

you can see the bit I had to bash flat at about 10o'clock next to the oil seal..

it must be the bit next to the oil seal that is catching the chain, its a small bore engine cover so there's no breather on it....so it cant be that

cheers for that, i will have a look tomorrow.

I seem to recall that one (or two) of the screws that hold the front plate need to be changed for coutersunk ones... otherwise the wider duplux chain will catch on them.

yeah, i have already countersunk the backplate and fitted 2 torx countersink screws, it doesent make any noise when the cover is off so it must be what andyminimad suggested earlier....

cheers.
