1993 1275cc rio,

just looking at the bits and haven't a clue how the radiator went on lol then i found the engone mount plate thing and realised question is for the fan.

i have a cap that the belt will attach to which goes over the water pump i also have two spacers where do they go on the pump or on the fan or either side?

what do i torque this upto or is it just tight.

any suggestions on the best way to fit the fan belt?

Not sure why you have two spacers.

Normally goes

pully -> spacer -> fan

The fan will say engine side on one side, guess what :) that side faces the engine.

It may be you pully doesn't line up with the bottom pulley, try fitting the fan belt over just those pulleys and look if its inline, if not it may be what the other spacer is for :)

i had two spacers on mine, 94 cooper and I had the same trouble. You'll figure it out as its quite easy to see when the alternator timing wheel and water pump pulley are in alignment. If I remember rightly, both spacers went on the inside of the pulley then the fan went straight onto the pulley. But I could be wrong. As for tightness, I did mine approx. white knuckle ft/lbs, possibly a bit less. ^_^

The pulleys for fan. water pump & alternator must be EXACTLY in line of you will suffer early fan belt failure.
Bolt the fan onto the water pump pulley with the spacers between fan pullt and fan. The fit the alternator and check the pulley alignment. If the alternator pulley is not in-line with the others you add washers between the water pump lug to which the alternator bolts and the alternator mounting lug until the pulleys are aligned. Then fit the belt and tighten by swinging the alternator. Finally tighten the alternator lower bracket, then the alternator bolt nearest the radiator and finally the other alternator bolt.

just to confirm water pump, then the pulley, then the two spacers then the fan. and check alignment.

Tried that and the fan pulley was slightly out so put a spacer either side of the water pump cover lines up perfect so it is now water pump spacer pulley spacer fan.

pump spacer pulley spacer fan.

This is what I have on my 1275, first spacer aligns the pulleys, and the second gives enough space for the fan to clear my timing cover engine breather casing.
