After removing the old oil gallery plugs in order to clean the galleries, is it worth while having the holes tapped and new screw in fittings (tapered plugs?) installed to replace them?
Just looking for best engineering practice on a re-build.

Yes definately. Makes cleaning them much easier when doing future rebuilds.

Thanks Phil,
Since posting the question I found an article by Keith Carver who seems to be against the practice. I guess the jury is still out!

I can't see any reason not to ? As long as you seal it with some appropriate loctite. Vizard reccomends it in his big yellow bible, that's good enough for me.

Agreed, Keith Carver quotes from the big yellow book but I think his objection to Vizard's advice was that the original plugs were now very hard to source and using a plug which is too long can cause catastropic damage.
Me, I am just looking for best practice........

I followed Vizard and tapped the gallery plug holes. If you are doing this yourself, it is easy to tap to the "right depth". Tap a little, then try the plug. Remove the plug and tap a bit deeper if necessary until the plug is just barely below flush with the surface. Installed that way your plug will not be too deep and only a little sealant is needed on the threads.
