Hi

My mini (Jynx) will be standard - but will be going topless - so probably BIVA - so ....

Just wondering what column , that is collapsible fits the Mini ?

I've heard the MK3 Fester , Allegro , and Ford KA up to 2008 & maybe Corsa

also would it be enough to get a collapsable collar section to bolt the steering wheel to ,

or to make a collapsing sleeve to fit the mini column

Am I allowed to weld up a steering column ??? (I am a welder by trade)

I've removed the bottom dash rail , and don't want to weld in the cross brace -

until I've got the new column in - I would like something that will be approx the same position

as I like the steering wheel position & don't want to move the seating position backwards

any Ideas / Pic's / diagrams

Thank's for your time ;o)

You can weld them. Standard ones are sometimes welded. Pigeon poo welds will be failed though so make pretty welds. ;)
If you are making one it doesn't really matter what you choose, as you can weld the u/j's in, and make it the same

Hi,

I got some 19mm stainless bar and welded and spline joint on the end which fitted on the standard Mini rack. And then got some UJs from car builder solutions that have ben drilled fot the 19mm bar to be welded inplace. Then and quick release steering hub joint welded on the other end.
I heard that if you have 2 universal joints in the system it doesnte need to be collapsible, as in an accident if the steering column doesnt come towards the driver then thats ok. So you can set up a couple of UJ so that doesnt happen.

Will try and find the links the the bits I bought if that helps.

Confirms what I suspected, a collapsible boss suffices. :-)

It does beg the question if there's any specification for how much "collapsing" the boss can do.

A collapsible boss will definitely not suffice. If it was that easy why would those of us who have been through SVA/IVA bother changing the complete column.
Check here http://www.businessl...&type=RESOURCES for a copy of the IVA manual. 2 universal joints can be used as long as they are at the correct angles.

Thanks for the info so far

got several idea's

been told MK3 fiesta and Ka both fit the bottom spline

looks like the U-J angles are between 10 & 30 degrees

Mk3 fiesta has the same splines and is almost the same length. If you get the pre-airbag version you can keep the steering wheel on for the IVA and then swap it for something more suitable after. You can also use the fiesta stalks if you can work out the wiring.
