i have a reconditioned 12g202 head and it appears to be missing the small retaining r type clips that hold the 2 collets together, anybody know where i can get hold of some of these? tried a couple of mini places but no luck :(

The only reason I could ever see for them was for initial assembly. so there is no point in fitting them after the head is back together.

Provided your valve springs are in good order you definitely do not need those clips, as the colletts will never become unloaded, even at peak revs. With old valve springs, you may get valve bounce at high revs, and that may theoretically cause the collets to be ejected, dropping valves down cylinders, with the engine inevitably being written off.

A very good reason, along with performance, economy and valve seat life, for fitting new valve springs every time you do a head overhaul. They are not the most expensive of parts.

You will not drop a valve unless the valve springs are inadequate. Presumably you did replace them on an overhauled engine?
