Rattle Can Fake Cadmium Finish

Well since the engine was out, I wanted to make the engine compartment more presentable. Also, I wanted the end product looking closer to what came from the factory but not an all out restoration. Some of the Cadmium or yellow Zinc finish parts looked very sad and this is what I did:

I used the cheapest aerosol paints I could find. First, a full coat of silver/aluminium colour. Then a very light coat of gold. Followed with an even lighter "mist" of yellow sprayed from a distance to achieve the proper yellow tint of Cadmium. Finally a mist of red and green sprayed from far away randomly to achieve the final Cadmium finish.
It all can be done without waiting for each individual colour to dry out but you have to be careful with "runs".
The pressure transducer in the front of the picture is new with the real finish for comparison.

It does not look half bad and it beats the "rust" look.

Yes, Eastwood has a kit but it is relatively expensive and it would probably be great for an accurate restoration. I got an acceptable finish (at least to me) for less than a third of their cost. It is better than the colour of rust anyway. Besides, I am cheap :D
