Who did the mixture and timing set up probably got it close. The 286 likes a lot of compression i'd try a 12:1 but then you'll need a stronger gearbox and keep in mind you'll have to rebuild the engine after few thousands miles..

I take it you're talking about leccy water pumps, 5bhp proven, but give cooling problems..

CR 12.1 and it will fly

You're only losing 12 hp between flywheel and wheels?? Whats your secret! 81 at wheels is more like 100 at engine in my experience if you dont have straight cuts. Unless mine is particularly bad. If so you arent doing too bad. Twin Hif 38s made a noticeable improvement for me in comparison with the single 44.

I have a full-on 1310 'S' with 286 etc. The C.R. is 11.2:1 and I use octane booster to prevent detonation. Power is around 115 at the flywheel and I use a SC CR gearbox to keep it on the cam.
What do you use the car for?
If you go for much more power you'll be needing to use a lot of revs all the time which will mean frequent re-building.
