Hi
My Mini is a standard 850cc. with a single HS2 carb. Today I noticed a fuel leak where the fuel hose connects to the brass tube on the float chamber lid. First, I tried tightening the hose clamp, but this didn't help. Next, I removed about 25mm from the end of the pipe, reconnected it and there was still a leak.
So, is there likely to be a leak between the brass pipe and the body of the float chamber lid?
I tried using a spare lid assembly, which is a new item, but something really wierd happenned. I put it on, connected everything up, and I could hear dribbling noises through the carburettor that some fuel actually got into the cylinders. Before I installed this spare one, I checked the valve to see if it seals closed by blowing through it, and it seemed fine.
Whats is going on here? I am totally baffled. Is there a way to seal the brass pipe on the original lid?
Any help about what I can do would be brilliant.
Cheers
John

That would seem to be very unusual, unless the casting has cracked. It is much more likely to be flooding, and overflowing from the vent, which on most models is under the baffle plate item 38 on the Somerford web site, and easily confused with the brass pipe leaking,

I would recommend a new needle valve and float, and check that it seems to be sealing to the lid, just in case it is leaking round the thread.

Hi
Well, with the engine running, and under close inspecton, fuel dribbles down the side of the baffle plate, not from underneath it. When I then switch the engine off etc, and remove the chamber lid, te fuel level is approximately half way up the bowl. Would this rule it out from being flooded?

When you are talking about a baffle plate, are you referring to the little sheet metal tab covering the overflow vent hole on the float bowl lid?

yes, it fits on the lid body where the brass tube enters it
