Got my new Rover Mayfair and its the most fun Ive had in years.

Thing is, it sounds alot louder (in a good way) than I would have thought a bog standard 998c would be. The previous owner said it does not have an S1 kit on it or anything and I've looked and that does seem correct although a new exhaust has been fitted at somepoint (again a standard one i think).

I'm not moaning, it sounds great, like a little race car but I just cant believe that such a basic model sounds like that. A stage one kit is on the agenda so I'm looking forward to getting one of those but I'm still not convinced that it doesnt already have one - Minus the filter. Is there a sure way to tell?

Seriously impressed with how nippy it is.

Eh..minis are loud, espescially when you have a single box exhaust or an LCB manifold. Stainless exhausts are quite noisy too

have a look at the exhaust system mines a maniflow which has the logo on the tip but you probably would have noticed that by now
someone might have cut one of the boxes out of the standard system and just replaced it with a pipe.

Depending if it had a catalytic converter in the first place, removing this and replacing with a link pipe can make it louder. Or a rusty hole in the exhaust.
My old 998 was pretty loud standard though, depends on whether you're comparing it to a modern car!

The standard peashooter exhaust is absolutley tiny, and the standard manifold is a one piece iron one, not split inlet and outlet manifolds like most tuning kits. A standard exhaust will go up up the back of the engine and join the manifold really high up, whereas a sports manifold will end at the bottom of the gearbox going under the floor pan and the exhaust wil join it there

is it loud compared to minis or is it loud compared to modern cars.

nowadays cars are so quiet that a nice sounding engine noise is in fact the whirring of the spinning components and the turbos and stuff. whereas a good old mini engine you hear the bangs, its a proper engine noise.

my standard 998 was the loudest thing on our drive even though the other cars have twice as much cc if not 3 times and turbos and superchargers(not on the same car).

Same here, my 998 is louder than my Mum's toyota verso, my Dad's seat arosa and my Sister's polo... but nowhere near as loud as the Lotus Sunbeam

Well its deffo louder than my 1.3l Escort which was 3 years older.

When I next jack up the car Ill take a pic and show you whats under there, maybe someone could confirm if my exhaust is standard.

Cheers.

does it not look like a standard pea shooter exhaust then?

might be a hole in the system if its standard and too loud?

Yeah its a pea shooter. We had a good look under the car when we were trying to sort out the exhaust bracket (was sitting a bit high). Didnt see any holes and looked quite new. Maybe its just the normal sound of the car! :D

When you say it's loud, is that from inside or outside the car? Could be that the sound deadening has been removed so it's noisier inside, or possibly a blow in the exhaust but that's unlikely if it's fairly new. Maybe the clamps holding the exhaust together are a bit loose?

Post up some pics of the exhaust and engine bay and maybe a video giving it a little rev, that we can tell for sure if something's a miss

My car is so loud I think standard 998s sound like vacuum cleaners :P but they are a bit louder than modern cars. Your car shouldn't have a cat as it's a 998, and it wouldn't need one if it does.

Hmmm will look for a cat, cant remember if it has one.

The noise comes from the front left, not the rear and yes there is no sound deadening at all lol
