998 Or 1098?

basically i'm planning an engine build over summer, and I've currently got a complete high-mileage 998 engine as my starting point.
i'm led to understand that a 998 can rev higher than a 1098 but the 1098 has more torque.
i plan to drop the finished engine into my mini which is a daily driver, and overall my aim for the engine is for it to be fun and responsive, as well as having enough power to embarrass the local saxo and 206 owners...
i'm wondering what peoples opinions are as to which direction to go, should i keep it 998 or up it to 1098? bearing in mind that this will be my first ever engine build, should i perhaps keep it 998, and then make a 1098 out of the engine that it will replace i.e. the one that's currently in the mini?
cheers,chris

It's hard to describe exactly what it feels like, but it just seems to require less work to go up hill or cruise at speed. I don't know if I would call that fun compared to flooring the 998 everywhere but everything is just easier in a 1098.
I personally would suggest keeping the 998. Just to experience it before moving bigger because it's fun in its own way. It's always hard to downsize.

You should ask around and try someone's 1098.
ah if only it were that simple, i rarely see other minis around here, i reckon I've seen two or three within the last year, always manage to see them when i'm not in my mini :/
anyway, you say it takes less effort to get up to hills or get up to speed. this would be my major concern, i love the 998 cause it's always very dramatic when accelerating i.e. lots of noise and revs, would the 1098 sound more civilised compared to that? i know the 1098 will not be a quiet engine, but does it have the same theatrics that the 998 has.

I can't be certain to decibel points, but when I switched my 998 for a 1098, they sounded about the same noise level wise. The 1098 does have a lower tone though, it's throatier.
If you want theatrics, put in a set of straight cut drop gears. They sound like a tank driving down the street.
How long have you been driving your 998?

i've been driving it just over a year, though its only been my daily driver since march.
i've decided to stay with the 998, purely on the basis that it will be an easier build. i reckon i'll have enough to learn about without having to worry about rebores and the like. now i've just got to make a spec list for the build and figure out a way to finance it lol.
if all goes well, i'll do another rebuild of the current engine in the mini, i.e. the one that'll be replaced, and make it a 1098.

lol
Is that what my car sounds like from the outside? I've only been inside it driving.
I'd hate me if I was my neighbor.

You've probably already done and finished this but you would not have had to rebore that engine to make it a 1098 as the 998 and the 1098 engine are the same apart from the 1098 has a longer stroke basically its a 998 with shorter con rods.

One really good option is to bore the 998 to +0.080" thus achieving 1060 cc. It will still be able to rev to around 7000 rpm (if balanced and with top quality pistons), but with, say, a 266 cam it will have improved low-end torque. Thus it's a 'win, win' situation in terms of driveability.
Never rev a 1098 past about 6000 rpm unless you want to risk a crank failure with the consequent gearbox damage.
