Hi folks, I'm off work on paternity leave for the next week so may in some stages of boredom take my carb off and give it a going over/cleaning.

I have a couple of questions.

Firstly here is my bay...

Posted Image

I believe I'm running a 1275 MPI with a carb. Hif44
There is a mega jolt system installed and electric fuel pump.
I have had a LCB put on into a maniflow stage 1 exhaust

So my questions

1. What should I clean the various components of the carb with?
2. Which needle would be best for my setup?
3. Any potential pitfalls with taking the carb off and disassembly?

Any advice greatly recieved
Cheers

1. Brake / contact cleaner will remove any tarring and gunge in the carb, it's great stuff - cleans everything!
There's a few paragraphs in the Vizard book on tweaking your carb for better gas flow if you're handy with a file / dremmel and really bored :D

2. Dunno :P But you can check the carb you have by measuring the diameter of the choke (the hole at the front with the butterfly in it), 44mm = 44, 38mm 38, simples.

3. If your carb isn't leaking / misbehaving I'd say don't take it apart, just spruce it up with the dashpot off. But if you do, make sure you buy the appropriate service kit in advance and read the process a few times over in advance before starting.

If you're going to clean up the carb, then get a K&N cleaning / reoiling kit and do the filter while you're at it.

Thinners or brake/clutch cleaner will clean the carb well, or you can get specific carb cleaner. A proper rolling road session with somebody who knows SU's will sort you a correct needle profil for your engine. An off the shelf needle is unlikely to be totally correct unless you're lucky.
The SU is quite simple to rebuild & the service kits are quite cheap.

2nd time round, shifty, have a 3 year old also, been off a week and only managed to straighten the steering wheel by removing and refitting. Itching to get playing. Luckily the weather has been poor. Thanks for the advice peeps
