Cant get the mini into 1st or reverse. just makes grinding sounds so i take it that its not disengaging properly. Stupidly the problem started ages ago but have left it and now is really bad, cant get them in at all. THe problem started as being a bit stiff and now is impossible. Any suggestions????

thanks for your help

could be a hydraulic problem, have you tried pumping the pedal to see if it gets any better?

is no good. just wont go into gear what ever i do well, unless i turn the engine off and put it in then start it up with it in gear. have been told that i can easily adjust the lever arm (not sure the name for it) on the clutch housing by adjusting the bolt/nut so that it engages properly. but am hoping someone might have had the same problem.

any ideas

Could be a number of things. The slave cylinders seize up very quickly if left standing for any period. Does the pedal go all the way to the floor or become hard halfway down??

Could need adjusting on the clutch cover or could be a cracked lever arm. The ball on the end of the arm can crack and then you dont get the full movement. Get somebody to press the pedal and look for a gap between the big nut in the centre of the housing and the clutch cover. Does the gap close up when you press the pedal??? This should tell you if the slave cylinder is ok or not...

If the gap closes up completely but the pedal is not giving full movement, then you need to adjust the stops.

Could also be a hydraulic problem due to loss of fluid. Check if it gets any better by pumping the pedal a few times. Is the clutch fluid full up??

Hope this helps!

Sounds like it's out of adjustment to me. Not just the throw out stop adjustment, if it's a pre-Verto clutch then the plunger stop needs adjusting too.

If you have checked all the above, you may well find the release bearing siezed causing either the thrust sleave or the diaphragm to have worn through, or both, in either case its a pull it apart and see.

Means that either the slave or master needs overhauling or replacing, since you already plan to replace the slave do that first and see if it fixes the problem.

I'm actually surprised nobody has mentioned the plunger rod in the slave cylinder... Those things tend to fail quite often and give the exact symptoms you described. In fact i've got an engine with the exact same problem downstairs.
Easiest thing is to just replace the entire slave cylinder rather than taking it apart with a rebuild kit.
