Hi

Ive got a 96 john cooper. When i am not accelerating or when im backing off the accelerator slightly the engine will judder quite badly. It makes the whole car judder. It feels like someone jabbing the accelator repeatedly. The problem is worse in 2nd and 3rd.

Has anyone got any ideas because ive run out.

If you try grabbing the rocker cover does the engine rock backwards and forwards??? If so, you need new steady bushes and possibly new bottom engine mounts...

Yip, sounds like engine mounts..
Not to hard to replace... and not too expensive either

Its not the engine mounts or bushes. I had these replaced when i bought it.

I think I may have solved it though. I was driving it yesterday and there was a loud bang and a puff of smoke from under the engine. When I looked to see what it was the HT lead offf the first cylinder had blown off the distributor (for lackk of a better word its one of those bloody no mechanical things) and the connections were covered in water or somthing so ill replace that and see how in goes.

Check the front subframe teardrop bushes! At the front of the front subframe - between the bodywork and subframe there are two teardrop shaped bushes. They may look OK but try pulling the bodywork away from the subframe to see if there is any movement.

Also you can check by turning the steering wheel from side to side when stationary and look to see if the engine is moving from side to side.

It seems to me that p'raps we've misread the problem maybe?

I would the juddering was a misfire? Unless I am misreading the problem?
