Scanner Not Being Able To Connect To Ecu

I wondeer can any one help. i have a Mini Cooper S. When driving i can feel it pulls back and the ABS light comeson. Today it pulled back and the EML and the engine light above it came on. A nechanic has looked at it but his scanner wont connect to the ECU.any ideas??? also are there any Mini Mechanics out there in the CHichester area.....

what scanner is he using? - cheap ebay "OBD" scanners wont read the ABS system for example...
