Hi, just discovered this great forum for unearthing the mysteries of my mini's lets say rather 'characteristic' way of functioning :P.
But to be prompt, I have as my first car a fun little 1989 Rover Mini and have been driving it around now for I'd say a month, though here's why the annoyance comes into play. The exhaust had fallen off and there were a few nit picks I needed tweaking up so I put it in for a service with a reliable garage whom had work extensively on classic mini's in the past. Though since coming out the service, it's become more and a more apparent of a very strange rubber squeaking noise that emits from only the right side of the car. This has become increasinly apparent over the past week or so and even subtle turns of the steering wheel towards the right (I'm talking even half an inch in rotation) then the noise rears again. Of course I took it back to the guy and he couldn't determine what it could be, his possibilites was the rubbers behind the wheel but other than that he identify there to be no real detrimental malfunctions, but the noise is still worrying and would love for someone to give me some suggestions of what this could be and/or if you've experience it yourself. Everything else about this little beast is fantastic, I just hate that my car conversatiosn are overpowered by this noise!

Please help! Thankyou!!!

You do need to investigate and get it fixed very soon, as there may be safety implications. It should not be hugely difficult or expensive once the cause is found. I suspect a wheel bearing. Can you tell whether it comes from the front or the back? (Driving with the window open may help.) Is it a sustained squeak while the car moves, or does it only happen as the steering wheel is rotating?

Well the sound definitely resonates more so on the front end of the driers side and it isn't consistent, only during wheel rotation, what do you suggestion I do perhaps, take it to an alternate garage and suggest it be the wheel bearing etc? Many thanks for all the help,

Wheel bearings does not sound like rubber..anyway easy check, jack up the car, rotate the wheel and listen to the noise :whistling:

Great suggestions, really appreciate the help folks, though the guy did jack up the car and even he couldn't necessarily locate the noise neither, he thought it may perhaps be the rubbers behind the wheel pressing together? if this sounds like anything plausible?

I am experiencing the same thing. Was the problem solved? What should I look for?

Is it not the boss on your steering wheel rubbing on the ignition cowl? You say it only does it when the steering is turned, is the steering stiff? Try greasing the rack?

I had an anoying 'rubber squeaking' noise coming from the left hand side of my car last year.

I went through everything and after weeks of head scratching / playing with bits, it turned out to be the rubber bushes on the front passenger side shock (which visually looked fine).

I discovered the problem when in a fit of desperation (one which I wouldn't recomend),  I took the shocks off and drove round the block and hey presto - noise gone. 1 x set of shocks later and all was well with the world!

It may be a long shot but worth investigating, maybe swap the shocks (a safer idea) and see if the sound moves?
