Hi does anyone know what size bolt/nut it is for the exhaust heat shield on a 1997 cooper?

You mean the sheid over the exhaust manifold behind the head? 5/16" UNF is the standard thread on manifold studs.

No I believe it is the cat heat shield.
Just after the front seats under the car
