Hey guys, my speedo has just stopped working on me. I changed my speedo unit before xmas, and now this one has packed up. The other guages are working fine, i.e temp, fuel etc, but the actual speedometer doesnt budge. Any ideas, the speedo cable is still in the back of the unit. Is it worth trying another speedo unit? Or is ir more likely to be the other end? Or the cable? Any advice would be very much apprieciated as i have an MOT due very soon!
Its a 998 Mayfair.
Many thanks,
Grim

i found that speedo cables have a tendancy to snap if not fitted correctly! you could need a new cable!

Also have you got the right cable for the specific speedo, as there are 3 sorts, a center speedo which uses a cable with a metal screw attachment, the SMITHS 2/3 clock which use a grey plastic clip connection, and the NIPPON 3 clock which uses a white plastic and metal clip connection. The three are not interchangeable... but occassionally a white one will work on a smiths clock for a short while but will eventually fail.

Don't worry about your MOT though, I don't think the speedo's part of it (although obviously you do need one).

Ive found out that the speedo cable has snapped, the nylon piece at the end has come off. Ive got the replacement cable... im just letting my hand recover from the beating it took getting it down the back of the engine, what a horrible job! It really started chucking it down and was getting dark so called it a day as i started it late. Hopefully ill get it done tomorrow.

How were you able to tell the speedo cable had snapped? My speedo died the other day and i can't find anything wrong with it. I got a replacement cable to try but having trouble unscrewing the old one from the gearbox, can just get my fingertips too it

yeh, i think the same as Dan. have been told by a mechanic that the speedo is not checked during the M.O.T.
Doesnt solve your speedo problem, jut your m.o.t

Easier from underneath, or take off the top hose and top rad bracket to push the rad back a bit. Failing all else you may have to remove the rad completely. Some people find it easier to remove the speedo cable drive coupling from the gearbox altogether and then change over the cable in comfort. It's held by a single bolt.

cheers managed to get it off with my fingertips from below, It looks like the cable had been shredded at the gearbox. I got the new one on but its still not working... maybe ive not screwed it on tight enough any other suggestions?
