Hi,

I don't know if anyone would be interested in this but Lidl are doing some clamps at the moment that are ideal for welding.
They come as a set of three mole grip type clamps for £4.99 and at that price I don't think you can go wrong.
Got myself a few sets ready for when I tackle the welding on my two projects. :-)

May just be worth a little look if your in need of some.

Thought i'd stick up the link so people can see them, I'm sure there enough for welding and you can never have too many clamps!

That link doesn't take you straight to them, which is why I didn't bother posting it.
You can see them though, if you select today's special buys at the top of the page and then enter your postcode.

The generator looks like a good deal also, 4 stroke, 2800W for £179, bit noisey for camping though I think.

The generator is a great bit of kit.
I bought one last year for my work, to run my power tools when I'm doing fencing and such like.
And it's actually not too noisy, well I don't think so anyway.

But what on earth would you use an arc welder for nowadays? OK they are cheap but £35 sat under the bench in the workshop for ever more is a bit pointless.

I'll be checking on the local store for the clamps - I have a set and they are useful but I often find myself wishing I had two of whichever type I'm using so a second set is a definite purchase.

that arc welder is 40-80 amps... bascially pointless as an arc welder, when i learnt arc welding i was welding 10mm plate up and the test pieces where 5mm... that welder woudnt even touch anything like that so fully a waste on £35.

arc welding is still used though,,,

as for the clamps dont see why they would be that bad.. altough i use irwin visegrip ones.. which are the blllks to be fair!

Yeah - I suppose I should have said "what the hell would you use an arc welder at home for".

I learnt on big oil-filled things welding lumps of quarter plate together. I've got an arc welder and my TIG set can be converted to arc as well but the one time I can remember that I've used arc since college was to weld a steel shaft onto a sledge-hammer and that was only because someone had borrowed my MIG (and I didn't have the TIG set at the time).

The quality of Lidl stuff I find is always pretty good for the money.
The real question is what will you be trying to run off this compressor ?
I have a very similar unit which I can run air nailers with quite sufficiently, the only problem with these small compressors is the tank size.
They don't hold enough air pressure to run very hungry tools with, so tools such as air sanders, spray guns, impact guns will drain the tank very quickly. The compressor itself is not man enough to refill the tank quickly enough, so you will find that the more powerful air tools will very quickly lag in power.
If your only going to use it for light duties then I would definitely recommend getting one.

I've also noticed they are now doing 6" air sanders so I'm definitely going to be getting one of those at that price.
And yes, I have a very large compressor that I will be running this on - has a 250ltr tank. :-)
