The second cylinder in from the left (fly wheel side)
obviously its on the way out, but what could of caused this and would this cause a knocking noise at this stage?

many thanks

That's not on it way out that's gone out the door round the corner and over the furthest hill.

It looks like it's been starved of oil and started eating its self, could well be the cause of the knocking. What do the others looks like?

To me that looks absolutely destroyed, and wouldn't surprise me if you've got a damaged crank and knocking.

Well from my complete novice in engines, looks ******* to me! and considering this is what the crank rotates against I would say yes that would be likely to cause a knock and what caused it, i would take a guess at sudden loss of oil pressure stopping oil getting to it and it just disintegrating, but I would wait for the big boys who know what they are talking about to help as im just guessing :)

If they look burnt then thats almost certainly lack of oil too cool them and just heating up.

Did you use an oil additive before that happened, especially one containing teflon? Just wondering, because I ruined an A+ that way, and the bearing damage looked very similar. I am guessing that the teflon broke down and formed hydrofluoric acid, because although the crankshaft was ruined the gearbox casing looked unbelievably clean inside, as if it had been in an acid dip..
