Was all up for changing my engine oil and filter tonight and couldn't get the old drain plug off because it was so big! Annoying because the new one I have from mini spares is smaller (21mm? Can't remember) and I have the socket for it.

Anyone got any idea if some minis used a plug with a larger end? Think the one on the car is about 25mm and the biggest socket/spanner I have is 24 :( Also don't have an adjustable spanner big enough.

`91 Mayfair by the way.

The sump plug is 15/16" AF spanner size. Forget about metric sizes, the classic Mini is almost all UNF/UNC thread sizes and a set of Imperial sizes is a must.

I had this. Tuned out someone had stripped the thread and retapped to a larger size, rendering my new plug redundant.

B****r! Might need a different plug, difficult to know without getting it off, then can't drive the car to get one!

Oh and I have got imperial as well, just they stop at a smaller size than my metrics.

Well literally classic haha. Frustrating as apart from the wheels and that it's totally standard. Grrrrr! Last owner was a bodger though judging by the underside so that fits.

Might just need a new copper washer really though. Just get a selection of sizes prepared.

Right... had a little measure and the one that's on there is about 1" so only a tiny bit bigger than the standard plug, but still too big for my socket set. What are the chances the thread is the same size or does it not work like that? i.e. thread size relative to head?

I have a new copper washer so may just re-use the same plug (although loathe to do so).

Why have you bought a new plug? Just buy a proper 15/16" AF socket, remove the plug, replace the copper washer, and put the original plug back in - they are re-useable...

A 15/16" socket won't fit as the plug in there is too large, and I felt like putting a new one in since I've never had it out before!
