Alright lads
At the moment I have a 998 stage 1 engine and im looking to bore it out or go up through the stages. I was wondering what the cheapest method of getting the most of my engine is as I cant find much info as I dont know where to look! Im looking to spend about £500. Also, would it be cheaper to buy a 1275 and bore it to a 1380? One last thing as well, how hard is it to bore a 1275 into a 1380 yourself?
Cheers guys

you have got no chance of building a 998 or a 1275 for £500........even if you used second hand bits you would be looking at the wrong side of £800 at least.......

a decent set of pistons are £250 on their own, plus the cam/followers, machine work, cylinder head, new bearings etc etc etc

and if you are a young driver then no-one will insure you on a 1380 anyway.

If I kept the 998, I would only want to bore it to a 1100-1200.
I meant changing the engine to a 1275, then boring that to 1380.

I do have to ask, how would you do it yourself?

It's easy, if you have a boring and honing machine, which unless you work at a machine shop, is very unlikely.

No point in over-boring an engine in the pursuit of power if you are on a budget, spend it on a nice cylinder head assuming the engine's not worn out and in need of a re-bore. Also, a 1275 is going to be a better base than a 998 because it's more powerful standard.

you can only bore a 998 out to 1080 as far as i'm aware, and even then the bores are getting a bit thin.

a 1380 engine will only be any good if it is built properly, i've known well built 1293 engines wipe the floor with poorly built 1380's that were built on a budget.

@Luke
I have a large garage and my dad has a good understanding of Minis as he has had over 10, but hes not great with engines. And I have two garages within a couple of miles which I am good friends with the owners so could use thier equipment.
I was really looking to bore a 998 to a 1180 is it? Or get a 1275 and bore it to a 1308, and to a 1380cc later.

just get a 1098 engine, put a 266 cam in it with a decent head and you will be seeing 65-75bhp with good torque.........thats what i did and its a great engine.
