Mini City
A+ block (may not be the original)
Bear with me if this sounds confusing but I cant add photos on to the pc so i am having to try and explain
I am currently about to start rebuliding after everything has been cleaned etc and am stuck in the early stages.
The haynes manual mentions adding RTV to the new bearing cap oil seal, i have an alternative to the RTV but cant find the oil seal anywhere - I have searched all the mini spares sites that I know and aseriesspares.co.uk and everytime i search it comes up with no results.
I had already bought both block and gearbox gasket sets and there is one piece that looks similar, half moon piece of rubber, but not close enough to be certain that it is that but cant see any other use for it.
Can anyone shed any light on a) if the part can be bought b) what i should be searching for or c) do i have the seal but it just looks different?
Hope this makes some sense

It's the rubber half-moon seal that sits on the gearbox end casing and seals to the front bearing cap. It didn't have RTV on it when Rover built it......so why now ?? But go ahead if you wish!

if you mean the end bearing, the seal between the block and the gearbox that's the one, its critical you fit it correctly being careful its doesn't move when you join the block
Good luck

I know the part, but the one I took off looks different to the one in the gasket set so i didnt know if i am looking at the right bit.
The one we took off sits perfectly and as a smooth service.
The new one, if it is that, is ridged down the middle and would need to be trimmed to fit

i've had to trim a bit off every one i've ever fitted, and i always use a bit of rtv for good measure

If you don't trimm it, there is no reason of putting there rtv. As I remember, on the edges there is specific shape, and if you trimm it, on one side it would be missing.
I have never trimm it and it keep tight

It must not be trimmed. When installed, it gets compressed intentionally. A spot of RTV on both ends may be helpful.
The other place where RTV really has to be used is where two gaskets meet at right angles. Once the engine is on the gearbox, I trim the ends of the mating face gaskets (sump gaskets on a normal installation) flush with the block face and put a spot of RTV there. Never had a visible leak, having done the job far too many times....
