Regardless they haven't got a choke? Do they not have a choke mechanism on them or am I just being blind!

Nice carbs......I have no real idea, but a vague notion that you just tickle up the floats to flood the carbs slightly for starting? Probably talking mince...........as usual.....

Not mince at all, that's exactly how you started a bike fitted with an Amal.

There Amal Monobloc, 'Monobloc' means the float chamber is on the body of the carb......

Above the float chamber, there's the 'tickler' pin this is used to basically flood the engine. You'll need to experiment to get the right technique, but basically hold the pin down for a few seconds and then try starting.

They're off British motorcycles like BSA,Matchless,AJS, Triumph from around the 60's. we've got crates full of them as my dad collects them.

Well, you would probably get more performance out of a larger carb suited to that engine. However they would probably work okay for everyday use.

Yes monoblocs have both a choke and a tickler . The choke is a slide choke. Where your throttle cable enters the top of the carb, there is another hole for the choke cable. Number 17 on here: http://www.google.co...:93&tx=67&ty=59

Take the lid off, there is a rectangular hole in the slide where the choke goes. You will need a choke slide, a brass guide, a spring and a choke cable (perhaps 2-1 converter) To be honest it would be easier replacing it with an SU carb with a Venturi. If you want to sell the carbs I'll buy them.
