The 1300GT is not the same as a Cooper S engine. It does have an 11 stud head/block but the crank is not the same. It uses the larger big ends and isn't EN40. The head is S spec though and the conrods are better than standard. As is the crank.

Standard 1275 stroke. The crank is not anything special - it does not have the S head, but it does have the large inlet valve 940 head. It will not be strong enough for a turbo.....that's why they developed the turbo engine - with the better main bearings......

And a standard crankshaft after the first few hundred...

the very first MG metro turbo engines used a different type of crank bearing which was soon disregarded because austin rover had major issues with them failing, many early metro turbo's were returned to main dealerships under warranty with "knocking cranks", it cost austin rover a fortune to sort it out!

i very nearly purchased a 3 year old (28,000 mile) MG metro turbo from evans halshaw back in 1986, the car was mint and my favourite colour (black), but when the salesman started it up from cold the crank rattled badly so i told him that the engine was ********d and i didn't buy it.

It is pretty much the same as the very last Mk3 S / very first 1275GT's. The shorter diff made them popular for sticking in Minis back in the day.

I'd be more worried by the age than the spec for turboing, but any late A+ would be a better option.

It was the production of the crank journals, not the bearings, that let down the early A+'s.
