I live over here in Germany and bought a 1984 Mini Rover with a 998A engine last year, and have recently encountered a problem that I need help with! When driving from a dead stop, accelerating, my mini will not accelerate smoothly. It shudders, hesitates, and is generally a pill. It will idle fine and rev up with no hesitation. I can change gears with no problem. Spark plugs are new, still waiting on the wires, distributor cap, condensor (parts are hard to come by easily in Germany). I checked the fuel pump, no problem there. My next step was going to be the carbuerator, HS4 type. Any suggestions, has anyone encountered this before and has a solution for me? Thanks!

Have you checked the oil in the dashpot of the carb? if it's low it might cause something similar to what you describe.

It's probably worth getting the dashpot off and giving it a good clean with an aerosol carb cleaner too.

Hope this helps.

Funny thing you should mention the dashpot. When this started happening, I noticed that the dashpot damper was loose and unscrewed. I figured this could not be good, so I put it back in and tightened it up, then checked the level and added some oil (13mm above the top of the damper according to my Haynes manual). Anyway, it has not gotten better, so I hope the carb and damper did not get screwed up by me driving with a loose damper! If it sounds like something is broken, please let me know! Thanks!

I will take the damper off tomorrow and give it a good cleaning, thank you!

I figured it out... It was the distributor. I put in new points, a cap and rotor arm, and all is good! Thank you for the help!
