It's probably worth getting the dashpot off and giving it a good clean with an aerosol carb cleaner too.

Funny thing you should mention the dashpot. When this started happening, I noticed that the dashpot damper was loose and unscrewed. I figured this could not be good, so I put it back in and tightened it up, then checked the level and added some oil (13mm above the top of the damper according to my Haynes manual). Anyway, it has not gotten better, so I hope the carb and damper did not get screwed up by me driving with a loose damper! If it sounds like something is broken, please let me know! Thanks!Have you checked the oil in the dashpot of the carb? if it's low it might cause something similar to what you describe.
