Will somebody please tell me what are, and where are the different oil/fluid points in the gearbox and transmission for an automatic. I have been told there is a problem with the hydraulics in my gearbox in my '94 automatic sprite, so i would like to completely change all of the different fluids that you can in the gearbox and engine.

Bit of a wierd one, but thanks in advance!

Only one oil in an auto Mini spraggy, and that's the engine oil. It supplies the autobox too; I recommend 20w50. An oil change can help with gearbox problems, but it may be too late.. these cars need regular oil changes, or things get expensive! A few auto Mini people on here that can advise you further :)

thanks both! bought the mini with the car only running to 30mph, works fine when the weight of the shell is off the wheels. Hopefully this oil change works, or else im going to have to sell!:( sick of driving my honda now, just want a mini!!

would anyone suggest any parts that may need replacing in order to make it clean as possible?

Are you sure it has a transmission fault? Or something else stopping the engine making power? Lots to go wrong unfortunately! (but 90% of it cheap and easy to sort, particularly with regard to engine tuning parts/ consumables).

An oil and oil filter change will not go amiss of course, going by MRA's website, a decent 10w40 oil and filter should do it the world of good :)

A quick and simple check to do ...

on flat ground , handbrake off , check you can push the car freely , and nothing is binding

check ignition timing setting, check oil in dash pot, check throttle cable isn't too slack, check air / fuel filter

does the engine rev hard , but the gearbox isn't changing gear ? or

is the engine bogging down , and not reving hard enough to change gear

lastly - ask guessworks the gearbox guru - he is all knowing in the ways of gearbox's ;D

hope you keep your mini -

best of luck

I took it to a local garage to see whether they could find the fault, there not specialists on classic cars or automatic transmissions so its a bit hit and miss. They said when they put it up on the ramp, it ran through the gears fine, and went over 30mph, which it wont on the road. The only thing they could think of was a problem with the hydraulics, im no mechanic so i havent a clue where to start, but i thought changing the oil may help it! no idea where or what helps the hydraulics function!!

sledgehammer: it runs fine until 30mph, where when you put your foot down, hard or soft it will just rev and not change up! however all was fine on the ramp

so you are missing top (4th) gear , when under load ?

No - sorry

for an auto I would suggest a stall test - but I am unsure if this is ok on a mini

as it's a non standard type of auto - does anyone know ???

I don't want you to try this test if it is going to do more damage

it involves putting a lot of stress on engine , gearbox & brakes for a short time (4 seconds approx)

I would say the stator inside the torque convertor is faulty - but only a guess

I don't understand this 'running it on the ramp' ?? Is this a no load test with the wheels dangling in the air???? The only worthwhile test is on the ROAD - or on a rolling road.... I would put 20W 50 oil in it - not 10W40. But it's probably much more serious than just needing an oil change.
