An oil and oil filter change will not go amiss of course, going by MRA's website, a decent 10w40 oil and filter should do it the world of good :)

on flat ground , handbrake off , check you can push the car freely , and nothing is binding
check ignition timing setting, check oil in dash pot, check throttle cable isn't too slack, check air / fuel filter
does the engine rev hard , but the gearbox isn't changing gear ? or
is the engine bogging down , and not reving hard enough to change gear
lastly - ask guessworks the gearbox guru - he is all knowing in the ways of gearbox's

hope you keep your mini -
best of luck

for an auto I would suggest a stall test - but I am unsure if this is ok on a mini
as it's a non standard type of auto - does anyone know ???
I don't want you to try this test if it is going to do more damage
it involves putting a lot of stress on engine , gearbox & brakes for a short time (4 seconds approx)
I would say the stator inside the torque convertor is faulty - but only a guess
