Just set it dot to dot - it will be absolutely fine.

I agree...I did a whole thread on this subject a while back and went through the process of timing a standard MG metro cam in with a DTI gauge...and guess what...the standard dot to dot setting was bang on..

But if you really do want to do this then have a look in the yellow bible..all the figures for standard cams are in there..

Oh! and here is the how to guide!!

Look for any and all numbers on the casting and post them here. I'm sure someone will be able to identify the cam. However, don't post them in this thread, start a new one with a title like "Is cam ZYXA a standard cam?" With a new thread you will get the correct eyes on your question.

As for the dot-to-dot, sure... set it that way, then check with the DTI to make sure there were no manufacturing errors with the cam or sprockets. While those above have had good luck with the standard method, there are plenty of reports (including one within the past month from AC Dodd) of parts being out of specification. AC posted a picture link of one such cam where the dot-to-dot method put the cam about 1-1/2" sprocket teeth out of position (whatever that translates to in degrees). Anyway, start with dot-to-dot, then check behind to make sure it is accurate enough for your needs.

Using the 'dot-to-dot' method I've had some cams time in spot-on, but others have been a bit out. Worst one was 9 degrees retarded.

If you want it right time it in. Dots are a starting point.

Easily checked with the 'equal lift at TDC ' test. But standard cams are correct - after market cams (and timing gear sets) are another matter all together........
