any pointers on identifying an original 1275 cooper s engine ?
a mate has 2 old 1275 engine and boxes in the bottom of the garage and we want to know what they are
they date back to when we were kids (to many years ago to mention) back in the day when "s" engines were easily found
both are ally remote change and not rod
both are fitted with 12g940 heads . one says mowog next to it but the other is to oily to tell till we drag um out and strip/clean um
any pointers on casting numbers or owt ??

easiest way is on the back of a 1275 cooper s block it has 2 removable tappet chest covers - like that on a normal 998 engine. a normal 1275 engine has a solid tappet chest area.

Also, unless i'm mistaken, cooper s heads are numbered AEG163 or the earlier ones are 12A185. doesn't mean the engine block isn't cooper s of course?

Extra head studs are a good give away with cooper s too...but you saying 12G940 says otherwise....could be from a 1300GT though

Hope this helps

got a feeling one is a 1300gt as its still wearing a tin mg rocker cover . tappet chest covers now ring an old bell but dont think either have them

cheers

MkI & II had AEG163 I believe ( early early ones the 185 ), but the MkIII S would have had an 11 hole 12g940 with larger intake and exhaust valves than late 940 heads
....as well as mentioned above....tappet covers with breather
