It depends entirely on what they do. If it's just the seats, then £25 a seat sounds about right. But most shops will recommend fitting new valves as well, so you may need to factor these in too.

Ive always used an additive on my standard head however the valve seats are pitted on the 295. Image in this post.
It's cleaned up alot now after some heavy lapping and I think the camera flash and paste residue exagerate the extent of the pitting in the image.
So it seems the hardened valve seats would be a good fix.
Also the valves are in very good condition and I believe they are quite new.

Thanks

When I had MED sort my 295 head out with new seats and hardened inserts they insisted on having new valves and fitting new guides to make sure all was lined up correctly. I paid them a small fortune to get it done IIRC more than £230, not including the valves that I bought and supplied.

It has turned out to be superb though...

My local machine shop has quoted me £160 for

Hardened valve seats
Valve guides
A skim
A set of new valves

When i asked about some porting and polishing he said "that's really gonna cost I'm afraid, I'd have to charge you £200 all in"

I'm really happy with that, he'd built a great engine for my .mk1 escort back in the day.

I'd been quoted £250 for a rebore at another company. I didn't tell him, but asked him to give me a price. £60 is that per bore? "No, that's for anything you want as long as it's not offset"

Result, I've just got to find a set of pistons now :)

Sometimes small business just like to have work on and be respected. Also I know the seat is knackered, it just looks a lot worse in the image.
Well I've just been quoted £25 + VAT per valve seat and £45 + VAT for a skim of 80 thou.

i did say this is what he'd quoted 'me' he's got a really good reputation in the area. he used to loads of work for the local volve truck dealership when i worked for them. you say pay peanuts, get monkeys, but i've paid more than peanuts in the past and got an engine from minisport which appeared to have been built by chimps lol
