As it was (i.e. prior to the collision), a high mileage depumered 998 like this, with a full MOT,

Is 92,000 miles high on a 33 year old car?

That's less than 3000 miles a year!

You're quite right it's actually very low mileage, if your basing it on average annual mileage!

But the reality is that an A-series engine is generally in desperate need of either a rebuild, or a transplant by that sort of mileage. Particularly in the case of the average classic mini, as the miles that they have done tend to be those high wear short journeys too, as opposed to effortless motorway miles. Also thanks to so many classic minis having spent the majority of their lives being owned by pensioners and housewives, that never took them further than the local supermarket or post office, then as we know low mileage examples are really not that hard to come by.

So yes by comparison and in terms of how it affects value, then I still consider 92,000 milles to be a high mileage example!! :-)

I can't see how a Cat C write off can devalue a Mini, every Mini i know has had at least 1 one new front end, half a boot floor, doorsteps and sills! All Minis are virtually Cat C write offs. lol. :gimme:

One word "Stigma"!!

it's not actually the damage or the repair that's the issue. It's the fact that on every HPi check and insurance database it will for ever show up as a written off/ repaired car. In some cases that actually makes it more difficult to insure, but more importantly it tends to send potential buyers scurrying away, because of horror stories in the press about poorly repaired accident damaged death traps that have been put back on the road. This then causes the "I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole" type of reaction to anything that has ever been written off, making written off/repaired cars much less desirable. They then only tend to appeal to those who are willing to accept a written off/repaired car in return for a much lower asking price. Which does actually mean that if you find a well repaired example, then there's actually real bargains to be had!!

But ask yourself the question, two identical cars for sale, in the same condition for the same amount of cash. One has been written off and repaired, the other hasn't, which one are you going to buy?

And maybe its had an engine rebuild! As long as its not rattling and smoking like a chimney, and as long as the bodywork is good and deseamed well I would've paid more than you're talking for the car!

Maybe indeed!!... But then in my experience knowing the effect that mileage tends to have on value, if you have actually had a rebuild (or a complete engine transplant), then you tend to also list the amount of miles covered since the rebuild or transplant, as well as the actual mileage.

I can also quite believe that a given individual would pay significantly more, or indeed significantly less than the figure I quoted, but as an approximate valuation I can really only comment on what roughly appears to be the going rate for an example like this, not what any given individual is prepared to pay.

all you need to work out is how much is it worth with a front end on? 2000 to a punter? and then deduct the cost of the repairs, 100 quid for a flip front, and a spray, then you know what its worth.
