Hi,

ive looked on the search function but i cant seem to find what im after.

My mini 35 1275 carb is getting ready to go back on the road and i would just like to clear something up before i spend more money. As standard the car had a cat, but i was told a few years back that i could run without one and still get through MOTs ok.

Does anyone know if thats possible? if so i can just get a normal maniflow exhaust system without having to fit link pipes etc so less chance of blowing and more chance of getting it tucked up nice and high.

Thanks in advance

Ian

I think it will depend on the tester..If the vehicle ID comes up on the computer then it will give him the limits to test to.

Hi Scotty

Just done the same, I replaced the OE exhaust with a Freeflow manifold and a twin box RC40.

With the 35 it always fails first time with the MOT computer, due to emissions rules for late 1994 cars assuming they are SPi.

After looking it up in the MOT bible, it usually passes (with a quick tweak on the mixture)

However there are some new rules for 2012 about ' if a cat was originally fitted, then it needs to be on and working', but like you I'm not sure
how it'll be interpreted.

I haven't been to see the MoT man yet, but any help here would be appreciated

My brother had a Mini 35 and had removed the cat. There's something in the MOT testers handbook for the cars that were fitted with a carb and a cat, that says they should be tested to 3.5% CO and not the injection test.

Had a chat, and yes the carb + cat combo gets the non-injection (BET) test. If the car was registered in 1994 the computer will come up with the 'default CAT test' limits, Apparently it's to do with the 'database' in the analyser.

In the 'In service emissions book, now 17th Edition the only Mini's listed are the SPi/MPi ones, and the rule is that they have to get an EXACT match to what's in the book, or it's the BET test (3.5%)

1.3l Auto TBi Engine Code X Serial No 059845 onwards 1.3l Manual TBi Engine Code X Serial No 059822 onwards 1.3l TBi Engine Code Y Serial No 060488 onwards 1.3l MPi Engine Code Z

The issue he's seen before is when a SPi has been converted back to carbs, but the Engine code is an EXACT match in the book, so should have a CAT test.

Also from 2012, he's saying that the new rule (regardless of emissions standards) is that if it originally had a cat, but not now, then it fails.

I'm not sure how this is interpretted elsewhere, but it might be worth a comment if anyone has tried to get a de catted carb through the MOT this year

I don't see how they would know a CAT was originally fitted to carb mini's though if the MOT database only as spi's and mpi's ???
