The fuel-air charge is meant to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise time in the piston's stroke cycle. Knock occurs when the peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The shock wave creates the characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and cylinder pressure increases dramatically. Effects of engine knocking range from inconsequential to completely destructive.

as above really... it's when the engine 'knocks' because the ignition/mixture's not right. It can (will) damage your engine

It's also called pre ignition, dieseling , or pinging. It's when the fuel ignites before the spark plug fires because of heat & pressure (like a diesel), it sounds like a ping, or "pink", hence those names. The danger is that it develops into detonation, that's when all the fuel explodes before the piston gets to top dead centre and the combustion temperature soars to the point where it's hot enough to melt things.

Pinking can be bad -

Never did find that chunk of piston that broke off!
