Basically since I've had my mini it has needed some sort of adjustment. Turn the car over fine if I put my foot down it sounds like its drowning, no power nothing really just chug chug then suddenly it will kick in to full power, it's as if the fuel is over fuelling and so it has to wait for it all to pass through or something can anyone suggest anything? Also sometimes there is a strong smell of petrol from the outside sometimes which always points to excess fuel. Anyone got any advice on where to start ?
Thanks guys

more detail would help, what engine, what carb

If its got the float bowl fitted..may be a sticking valve, causing the bowl to flood..this will give a petrol smell

i would say check you tubes that run from the gas tank, to the fuel pump. if those are all ok, try looking at the carb and maybe adjust it a bit so he doesn't take too much fuel in. Can you drive it normally after it did the drowning noises? or is it just undrivable? More detail would help indeed!

No it's completely drivable just can't put my foot down because it does this if I ease the accelerator in its not so bad but until 3500 rpm ish it's chugging abit and underpowered

the fact that you can't put your foot down means or your pump can't pull enough petrol in because of a clogged up tube, or your carb is set too take too much/too little gas. Check these 2 things, i'm sure your answer lies there.

Hope this helps.

So check the tubes coming out of and into the carb, and have a fiddle with the mixture adjustment screws on the carb

I just had this problem, very sluggish and stinkking of fuel outside the car. Fuel was pouring out the carb overflow when i accelerated. long story short i had a bit of fuel line rubber stuck in the carb float bowl valve. I undid the 3 screws and took off the lid. Inside theres a brass nut that houses the valve, take it out and look for debris stuck in there. be careful thou it's flammable stuffthat there petrol hehe. plug off your fuel pipe with a bolt or something when you disconnect it.

Have you checked the oil in the dashpot?

Best thing you could do is get a manual say a haynes one and get familiar with the engine topping up points, and general lay out, It'll help you a great deal. The carburettor dash pot is central, and to the back of the engine. It's a little cap that you unscrew and inside you fill it with engine oil (20/50). You can buy it from halford's to do an oil change and also to fill this little pot up. Only top it up till it's about half an inch from the brim, leave a little room. Symptoms of a dash pot not topped up are hesitation when accelerating and irratic throttle, give it a go i bet it's empty :)
